New South Wales detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad charged a man on Friday 22 April 2022 following an investigation into alleged ‘online procurement’ in Sydney’s northwest. The arrest is part of the ongoing Strike Force Trawler by police across Australia and internationally targeting sex offenders.

The 59-year-old man was arrested just before 10am on Friday after extensive investigations into the man’s activities. Following the arrest, police executed a search warrant at the man’s Kenthurst home, seizing several electronic storage devices for further examination.

Police reported that earlier this month, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad’s Child Exploitation Internet Unit (CEIU) began engaging with the man online. ‘Police will allege in court that the man believed he was speaking with the mother of a girl under 10 where he engaged in sexually explicit conversations about acts that he wished to perform on the child and made arrangements to meet the child for sex’.

The man was taken to Liverpool Police Station where he was charged with several child sexual offences and refused bail. The man was set to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday 23 April 2022.

Police have urged parents and guardians to be mindful of the dangers posed by the online environment and encourage them to take an active interest in their children’s online activities to keep them safe. They also urge anyone with concerns about suspected child abuse or exploitation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
