Children in California from 12-Years to be Vaccinated Without Parental consent

The state of California has passed a bill through its first legislative hurdle that allows children to be vaccinated, including against coronavirus without parental consent. Should this become law, the state would be allowed to vaccinate children without parents’ consent or knowledge.

Currently, vaccines for this age group are only allowed without parental permission specifically to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Under state law, 12-years and above can consent to Hep B and HPV vaccines.

Sen Scott Wiener said his bill would empower teenagers to get vaccinations for their own health. The bill was opposed by members of the General Public at the hearing.

The contentious bill is causing much debate from all sides with arguments in favour “to prevent outbreak and save lives. With arguments against “advocating for civil and human rights, including the possibilities/dangers of adverse reactions.” Arguing the solution is to allow parents to make informed consent, as children simply do not have fully developed decision-making skills to weigh the risks and benefits. To be allowed to make their choice without external pressures or punishment.

The bill which will now go to the full Senate was approved by the 11-member committee on a 7-0 vote, with 2 members from each party not voting.
