Robert Hughes convicted pedophile is due to be released from prison and subsequently deported to the UK.
The 73-year-old star of the Aussie sitcom Hey Dad was seen to be looking old and frail as he serves his 10-year and 9-month sentence after several disturbing child rape offences including sexual intercourse without consent and numerous acts of indecent assault.
He saw out a six-year non-role period that expired in 2020 and was twice refused bail.
The sex offender will be escorted to Sydney Airport no later than June 14 after his Australian citizenship was renounced and the federal government cancelled his residency visa. Hughes has been told he must surrender his address, holiday plans, and any movement around the UK. He must also be of good behaviour, cannot commit any further offences, and adapt to ‘normal lawful community life’
Sarah Monahan who was a former co-star with Hughes was present at the hearing and bravely told the press that’ he looked really old’ and continued to say ‘anybody who’s going through it and they’re scared to go to court to see them, absolutely do it because it takes their power away. I wanted him to see me..and that I wasn’t scared anymore’ Hughes appeared via an audiovisual link from the prison.
“On the one hand I’d prefer him to stay in jail where he’s not hurting kids and on the other hand it’s like, just let him go, let him be someone else’s problem, and then I don’t have to deal with it anymore.”
Monahan also stated she was surprised there were no programs offered to him in jail as he was considered a low offender and believed it was a possibility he could re-offend as he was a ‘denier’
While in jail, Hughes maintains he was subject to constant verbal and physical abuse that included excrement, urine, and boiling water being thrown over him.
Hughes continues to have the support of his family in the UK, including his wife and former celebrity talent agent Robyn Gardner
