An infant tragically died on Thursday following an alleged suspected poisoning at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
West Midland police arrested a 27-year-old nurse from the hospital on Thursday evening following the child’s death in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
West Midlands Police said: “We’ve arrested a 27-year-old woman in connection with the death of an infant. The woman was arrested on Thursday evening at a property in West Midlands area on suspicion of administering a poison with intent to endanger life.”
A spokesperson for the Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust said they have requested for West Midlands Police to undertake investigations into the matter.
“The staff member involved has been suspended by the trust after following the national process on the sudden unexpected death of a child.” the spokesperson said.
“We are supporting the infant’s family at this distressing time and ask that privacy is respected during this process,” the spokesperson said.
The Evening Standard has reported that according to police, the nurse has been released pending further investigations and forensic testing.
