A car laden with flammable substances burst into flame on impact killing the unknown driver.
The incident occurred around 6am local time (03:00 GMT) on Wednesday, the car did not enter the embassy compound. A crime scene has been established and is under police guard whilst forensic investigations continue.
The scene captured via security cameras clearly shows the car engulfed in flames. No information has yet been released on a possible motive for the attack.
The Russian embassy released the following statement.
The embassy expressed condolences to the family of the driver.
“We must state with regret that whatever the motives of the driver,” “There is no doubt that he committed this act under the influence of an explosion of anti-Russian hysteria in connection with a staged provocation in the city of Bucha,” Referring to the atrocities carried out by Russia’s army in the Ukrainian city.
Russia’s ambassador to Romania, Valery Kuzmin, said the embassy in Bucharest “repeatedly” received threats by email and that the atmosphere is very tense.
Relations between Romania and Russia deteriorated further with Romania’s foreign ministry declaring Russian official’s persona non grata.
The previous day Romania ordered ten diplomats be expelled from the embassy.
