New South Wales Police continue to investigate the cause of a fatal house fire overnight in Sydney’s south-west. Emergency services were called to the Varden Way, Ambarvale home at about 10.20pm on Tuesday 26 April 2022 after reports of a fire.
Fire and Rescue NSW forced their way into the rear of the house where they found a man unconscious. Rescuers moved the man outside and performed CPR, but he could not be revived. The man, believed to be in his 30s died at the scene.
Officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command established a crime scene, which will be examined by specialist forensic police. According to news reports this evening, the man has now been identified as Kosta Bastas, a father of two young children. He was home alone at the time of the fire.
According to eyewitnesses, little could be done as the flames engulfed the home. Neighbours said Kosta had been playing music all afternoon so was a shock to then see the house in flames. It is believed a faulty heater may have started the fire. Investigations are continuing into the cause of the fire.
Homeowners have been urged to ensure they have working smoke alarms in time for winter.
