Black smoke is blanketing the sky north of Melbourne as a factory in Brunswick East burns
out of control.
The fire began on top of the Alpha Trading building, an import export business on John Street early this afternoon.
Black smoke can be seen from kilometres away, and a smoke warning for a number of nearby suburbs has been issued by Fire Rescue Victoria.
Brunswick, Brunswick East, Carlton North, Coburg, Fitzroy North, Northcote, Parkville, Princes Hill, and Thornbury are amongst the suburbs currently effected.
Footage and images from surrounding area:
More than 60 FRV firefighters responded to the scene just after 1pm today after receiving multiple reports of the fire. Crews arrived within minutes of the calls and found the factory well alight by that stage.
Firefighters are working to protect neighbouring properties until they are able to bring the fire under control, however one witness did claim that it appears as though the flames had “spread to neighbouring apartments.”
Ambulance Victoria paramedics and Victoria Police are working alongside firefighters and have asked the public to avoid the area to allow easier access for emergency vehicles.
