South Korea’s military is reporting that North Korea has attempted to launch yet another missile, however, it is believed the launch failed.

Apparently, the missile exploded shortly after takeoff, scattering debris all over the Northern capital of Pyongyang.

It is believed that the North are developing longer range inter-continental ballistic missiles, with the capability to drop nuclear pay loads.

If the North does in fact end up firing a full range ICBM missile, it would be the first time since 2017 and would also be a violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the ICBM was fired from the international airport in Sunan, outside the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.

Joint Chiefs of Staff went on to state that “it is presumed that it failed immediately after launch”. It was thought to most likely be an ICBM, which apparently exploded in mid-air while still in its booster phase, at an altitude below 20kms.

The failed launch highlights the danger behind the decision to construct and then use a facility of this nature so close to an airport and also heavily populated civilian areas.

Construction began in 2016 in very close proximity to Sunan International airport, with suspicions that multiple more test firings are planned to leave from this facility.

This location for the facility was chosen as it’s in close range of ballistic missile component manufacturing plants as well as being close to Pyongyang itself.
