New South Wales Police were called to a unit complex at around 12.50am on Thursday 19 May 2022 in Marshall Street, Bankstown following a report of a man armed with a shovel. The man had allegedly smashed a window of the one of the units and intimidated the occupant. Officers from Bankstown Police Area Command attended where they were met by the man running at them with the shovel.

Officers directed the man to drop the shovel but when he failed to comply a female constable deployed a taser. The man continued to resist arrest until the officers handcuffed him.

The 43-year-old from Illawong was taken to Bankstown Hospital by NSW Ambulance paramedics under police guard.

The man was charged with two counts of resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, use of an offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence and destroy or damage property. Initially refused bail, the man was granted unconditional bail in a beside hearing on Friday 20 May 2022, to appear before Bankstown Local Court on Thursday 9 June 2022.

Officers were not injured during the incident.
