Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has issued a recall on three high blood pressure medications,
Accuretic and Greenstones- quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets and Quinapril HCl/hydrochlorothiazide, are bands involved in the recall.
These medications are designed to treat hypertension, reducing risks of cardiovascular diseases like strokes.
At this stage, the recall is merely voluntary, and is due to the fact that the tablets contain nitrosamines which pose a cancer risk. Pfizer has released a statement that “there is no immediate risk to patients taking this medication.”
Zantac was previously recalled in 2019 for containing nitrosamines.
In case you aren’t familiar with nitrosamines, sciencedirect.com defines them as: “strong carcinogens that may produce cancer in diverse organs and tissue, including lung, brain, liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, oesophagus and nasal sinus.”
Pfizer has released the following statement about Nitrosamines that they “are common in water and foods, including cured and grilled meats, dairy products and vegetables. Everyone is exposed to some level of nitrosamines. These impurities may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels over long periods of time.”
They also claim that nitrosamines may be unintentionally introduced when certain chemical reactions are used in the production of medications. Pfizer has also recommended that anyone taking these medications consult their doctor about alternate treatment options.
Pfizer has a questionable track record, to say the least; receiving the largest fine in human history in 2009 worth $2.3 billion U.S. for fraudulent marketing.
