Urgent Warning after Lake contamination.
The Environmental Protection Authority has closed off the area around Altona’s Cherry Lake in Melbourne after dead fish were noticed floating near the banks by visitors of the popular walking spot, on Monday morning.
An urgent warning was issued to residents after hundreds of fish were killed due to contamination in the lake, with a health warning issued to steer clear of toxic water.
The contamination is believed to be due to a spill of 12,000 litres of surfactant, a chemical found in detergent, thought to have been leaked out from a nearby factory after a fire.
Stephen Lansdell from the EPA said, “it unfortunately occurred in Altona North and made its way through the storm water system.”
Melbourne Water is assessing how much damage the contamination has caused, while the EPA removes the dead fish. Authorities have given no indication of how long the cleanup will take.
In a statement made by the EPA, “People should avoid contact with waters at Cherry Lake and Cherry Creek, Altona. There is also a large number of dead fish reported. Do not consume any fish until further notice.”
Pet owners have also been advised to refrain from letting their animals swim in the polluted water.
“It is a dynamic situation and will take some weeks to break down” said Mr Lansdell.
