Up to $700 a day will be on offer to casual teachers from any Australian state to fill the teaching shortage in Victoria’s regional areas.
The Education Department of Victoria is using a cash incentive to draw teachers toward the more rural areas of the state to fill a mass of teaching role shortages.
Teachers will be paid $300 a day over their base pay to travel to regional areas, which will see them almost doubling their usual income.
Schools in Victoria’s regional areas were hit hard by the effects of the pandemic, according to Anzuk Education recruitment leader Tenielle Henderson, stating the funds would cover travel expenses for interstate or metropolitan teachers ‘plus some extra spending money.’
Schools Australia-wide are struggling with staff loss due to vaccine mandates, with over 420 full-time public school teachers in Victoria alone deciding against the experimental vaccine mandate.
The cash incentive is likely to continue through to term 3.
The new incentive will allow teachers who fill long-term roles such as regional teaching where the shortage is most dire to be eligible for payment between $9000 – $50,000
If they then remain in the job, they will be paid a retention bonus of $9000 a year after the second, third, and fourth years. They will also be eligible to apply for relocation costs if needed.
