Russian tennis players are now starting to feel the pressure from nations and their sanctions. British Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston has said he wants outright assurances from Russian players to denounce President Putin and his actions. Also that Belarusian and Russian players to compete under a neutral country and not fly their respective countries flags.

This is a difficult time for the world’s number 1 tennis player Daniil Medvedev.

The British government is in talks with sports ministers in other nations to reach a “broad global consensus” on how to treat individual athletes.

The WTA tour boss Steve Simon has also spoken out about treating the athletes unfairly. The WTA has never before banned athletes as a direct result of politics. If the government steps in and made the rules, they would have no choices.

Simon also goes on to say that he feels strongly against individuals being penalized by decisions of an authoritarian leadership. ‘The WTA does not support any decision that makes Russian citizens pay the consequences of the government.’

Simon agrees with the sanctions placed upon the ATP, WTA, ITF and the four grand slam tournaments. The October tournament has been cancelled in Moscow this year. The Russian and Belarus teams have also been banned from participating in the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup, with Russia being the defending champions.

Simon is hopeful that the sanctions will continue, but wants the government not to ostracize the athletes. The athletes and citizens of Russia are innocent victims and being isolated is unfair. ‘What about the Russian refugees? Shall they also be treated differently than the athletes?
