As announced on Wednesday, Covid-19 vaccine mandates are set to be axed from 12.01 Thursday morning for the education sectors and passenger transport industries, allowing unvaccinated workers to return to their employment. The current vaccine mandates for these areas under the police public health directions are said to be replaced with management directions via the agencies responsible for these particular sectors.
During a press conference, Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said “essentially there’s not a lot of change for people, although we are enabling unvaccinated people to come back into the workforce under certain conditions.” He told reporters, “it still the strong advice that people should be vaccinated and be up to date with their vaccinations.”
The timing of the ease of mandates, comes even after SA recorded the second highest number of daily Covid cases since the beginning of the Pandemic, indicating how dire the situation has become, but stating that the change was due to the emergency management declaration not continuing forever.
According to the Education Department chief executive Rick Perrse, allegedly there are 204 staff from government schools and preschools who remain unvaccinated and on leave, not stating the number of whom have lost their jobs entirely. This is as apposed to 31,200 staff who have declared their vaccination status and remain employed.
The conditions are, as of Thursday, unvaccinated staff may return to the workforce but must wear a face mask indoors at all times, and undergo daily rapid antigen testing, except in certain high-risk settings such as disability units, special school and remote Aboriginal schools, where mandates remain in place.
