Tasmania Police are investigating after an on-field assault left senior Burnie Dockers footballer Tobi McInnes suffering a cardiac arrest. Reports suggest an on-field melee broke out in the third quarter of a North-West Football League Seniors clash between the Penguin and Burnie Dockers Football Clubs on Saturday 21 May 2022.

McInnes, who made his debut for the club in April was taken by ambulance after being treated at the scene by trainers and staff of the club and three off-duty paramedics who had been watching the game.

According to club president Jamie Boag, without the efforts of Hannah and Elka Best and Holly Johnstone, Tobi may not be with us today.’’

The club has organised counselling for players, spectators, and staff who witnessed the traumatic event.

Tasmanian Police Detective Inspector Steve Jones has urged witnesses to come forward and assist investigators. He further stated that “police take any instances of assault seriously, and we need the community’s help to make sure those responsible are properly identified.”

Tobi McInnes is reported as conscious and in a stable condition, and currently undergoing further tests to determine his condition.

Following the incident, the president of the Burnie Dockers football team urged every sporting club to have a defibrillator and oxygen on hand – regardless of the cost. The call comes after Tobi McInnes suffered a cardiac arrest after apparently attempting to break up an on-field melee. The match was abandoned after the incident.
