Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein has called a snap press conference this afternoon to announce that he will be stepping aside as premier and quitting politics altogether.
Mr Gutwein thanked his family, his staff and his parliamentary team for their support over his two year stint as premier.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison thanked the premier for his service āAs Premier since 2020, he led Tasmania through a once-in-a-century pandemic. Peter did not put a foot wrong,ā Mr Morrison said.
Mr Gutwein said he would remain in the top job until the Liberal party elects his replacement later this week. A recount will be held in Bass for his replacement within the stateās House of Assembly.
