Dr Joseph Kabungo died at the conclusion of the Nigeria vs Ghana world cup playoff match in Abuja on Tuesday.
The Nigerian Football Federation said in a statement to GOAL that Dr Kabungo died as a result of cardiac arrest “he died as a result of sudden cardiac arrest”, having been “found gasping for breath near the dressing room of the Ghanaian team”.
Dr Kabungo from Zambia was appointed as the CAF anti-doping officer for the match which ended with a 1-1 draw.
Dr Kabungo brother Kalusha Bwalya twitted a post sharing the sad news.
“Deeply saddened & devastated on the sudden passing of my young brother Dr Joseph Kabungo. Honoured & blessed to have known such a humble, courageous, hardworking, committed spirit of a man. May the Lord bless and comfort his family, football family in 🇿🇲, Africa and the World”
