UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that a nuclear war is “back within the realm of possibility”, after Russia gave fresh orders to its nuclear forces.
Guterres stated on Monday that “raising the alert of Russian nuclear forces is a bone-chilling development.”
He went onto to say that “the prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility.”
In late February President Vladimir Putin ordered his country’s nuclear deterrent forces to be on high alert, blaming the move on NATO and economic sanctions imposed on his nation by Western countries.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues, experts have expressed concern that Putin could take drastic actions which would include the use of nuclear weapons.
Although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he believes Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons is a “bluff.”
