An eight-inch syringe was plunged into Martin Roberts (58) heart by doctors whilst he was fully conscious because of a horrifying rare medical condition.

Roberts, star of HOMES UNDER THE HAMMER, was rushed to Bath Hospital last Wednesday and told he had “hours to live”.

The condition known as cardiac tamponade required the syringe to drain fluid from around Roberts’ heart.

“I watched as they drew out syringe after syringe of this liquid.” Said Roberts, as he opened up about his terrifying ordeal.

The fluid build-up was preventing his heart from functioning correctly. It could not efficiently pump blood around his body.

“I was awake for this, but I was a bit woozy,” Roberts told OK! Magazine.

“There was a tube that went in through my chest cavity, down into the sack around my heart.” He said.

The fluid was removed and then squirted into a plastic beaker. Cardiac tamponade can happen to people of all ages and approximately two out of every ten-thousand people are affected by it.

The fluid build-up is known as pericardial effusion. When the fluid puts pressure on the heart, it prevents it from pumping.

Roberts said, “In the end, there was about a litre and a half of stuff they took out. In my case, it turns into something called cardiac tamponade. This is where it fills rapidly and starts strangling the heart. And that’s… the killer.”

This rare condition can be caused by several different factors. These can include cancer, autoimmune disease, and reactions to medicines. It is also something that can occur after a patient has undergone open-heart surgery.

Symptoms for this condition vary. Some of them can include chest pain or discomfort, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and enlargement of neck veins. An upset stomach has also been identified as a key symptom of this condition.

Roberts said that he had begun to feel unwell over the Easter Bank Holiday. He wrote his symptoms off as long Covid or Asthma.

By Wednesday he feared he was having a heart attack and his wife Kirsty took him to the hospital. Doctors attended to him within less than a minute of his arrival and they then did a series of tests, which revealed that his blood pressure had plummeted to half that of a healthy person. His liver and kidneys were down to 30% of their normal capacity. After discovering all this they realised the excess fluid was around his heart.

According to Roberts, doctors fear that he may have an underlying respiratory condition that likely caused the problem. He is now on antibiotics and his liver is ‘still struggling’. Doctors are keeping an eye on his progress. He told the Jeremy Vine show that he may be in hospital for weeks.

  1. Would you please be thoughtful enough to clarify if the patient had previously had either The Jab, or a Booster, prior to the attack? It would be very helpful if you could, thank you.

  2. Can you please advise as to whether Rajesh had received a Covid injection of the vaccine, or a booster shot? This is of vital importance, thanks.
