Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) shot and killed an unarmed 47 year old after she allegedly approached the soldiers in a “suspicious manner” on Sunday.
In a press release on Sunday, the IDF stated that “the force opened fire as part of a suspect arrest procedure that included firing into the air. After she did not stop, the soldiers fired at her lower body.”
In footage posted online the woman, identified as 47-year-old Ghada Ibrahim Ali al-Sabiteen can be seen walking with her hands raised towards a checkpoint in the village of Husan.
Sabiteen received medical treatment at the scene before being transported to a hospital in Brit Jala, where she died due to blood loss. Reports indicate that Sabiteen was a widow and a mother of six.
Her shooting has been condemned by the
European Union delegation to the Palestinian Authority.
“Horrified by the killing of a Palestinian woman by ISF near Bethlehem,” it said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences to her family. Such excessive use of lethal force against an unarmed civilian is unacceptable. This incident must be swiftly investigated and the perpetrators be brought to justice.”
