U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has met with China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi in Rome, where he warned that Beijing would face “consequences” if it helped Moscow evade sanctions which were imposed on them due to the war in Ukraine.
During his meeting with Yang, Sullivan made it clear what Washington’s concerns are while highlighting the repercussions China would face globally if they continued to support Russia.
Post Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, Russia asked China for military equipment, sparking concerns in the White House that Beijing will undermine Western efforts to help Ukrainian forces defend their country.
Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for China’s embassy in Washington has stated that China found the situation in Ukraine “disconcerting” and that “we support and encourage all efforts that are conducive to a peaceful settlement of the crisis.”
Sullivan has also gone to to say that the U.S. will not “allow there to be a lifeline to Russia from these economic sanctions from any country, anywhere in the world.”
