A 19-year-old Indigenous man was shot by police six times after he allegedly threatened police officers with a spear in the Palmerston suburb of Gray at around 9am on Tuesday.
The man underwent surgery on Tuesday and is in a critical condition in hospital.
On Wednesday afternoon, Assistant Commissioner Michael White gave details of the Police account of the events that took place.
Commissioner White said one officer fired six shots at the man while another officer deployed their taser.
“The information that’s been provided to police and clearly confirmed now is that the person who was shot was armed with a spear and was attempting to throw that at the police officers at the time of the shooting,” Commissioner White said.
An internal critical incident investigation is underway into the use of force by the officers.
